How does Hyperbaric oxygen help children with Autism?

Try holding your breath....

Very soon you'll get out of breath because every cell of your body needs oxygen to survive.

Oxygen provides energy for all of your body's cells and your brain is one of the hungriest organs in your body.

Your brain is only about 3% of your body weight, yet it uses a whopping 20% of the oxygen you breathe.

It is very sensitive to decreases in oxygen and that's why strokes, cerebral palsy, autism and other brain disorders are so disabling because, at some time, for a few moments, brain cells were damaged when they didn't receive enough oxygen.

During your normal day-to-day activities your red blood cells are the main carriers of oxygen.  However, did you know that only about half of the fluid that we call blood is made up of red blood cells?  The other half is the liquid portion of your blood, called plasma.  Normally the plasma doesn't carry much oxygen at all.

When you're in a hyperbaric chamber,  the pressure causes extra oxygen to dissolve into your blood plasma so that not only the red blood cells, but also the plasma becomes drenched with oxygen.  So under pressure, your plasma carries extra oxygen to areas where circulation is poor.  The oxygen gets into these areas with poor circulation by seeping into the damaged areas, areas that the red blood cells are too large to reach.  This extra oxygen takes down inflammation and provides the energy necessary for healing areas in the brain. of a child with autism.

As areas of the brain heal, parents see improvements in speech, social skills, eye contact, and other functions.

We like to refer to hyperbaric  oxygen as "EXTRA STRENGTH OXYGEN" because it acts more strongly than oxygen given outside a hyperbaric chamber at  normal pressure.  The pressure is the key ingredient that provides the strength to heal problems that normal oxygen can't.

Preliminary Studies

A study published in 2006 with eighteen children showed marked improvement in the areas of speech, motivation, sensory and cognitive awareness, mannerisms, communication and overall health

Before and after comparison of brain scans showed areas of improved blood flow that correlated with improvements in autistic behaviors.

Kid's Responses

•  Five Year Old Boy •

We saw profound changes with this 5 year old boy.  Before hyperbaric therapy he would only play by himself.  We was overly sensitive to normal noises, and his speech was underdeveloped.  After one month of hyperbaric oxygen therapy he would interact and play with his brother and other relatives.  His sensitivity to noises got less and he was much more verbal.  Ask anyone who knows him and they'll tell you that he's a different person.

•  Twelve Year Old Girl •

After only four hyperbaric sessions this child bowled a whole game with her school group.  Previously, she would only throw one ball, with supervision, and then wander off.  After several more sessions she has made the "bathroom connection".  Her family can now understand some of the words she says.

•  Eight Year Old Boy •

Since beginning hyperbaric treatment this child's aggression has dramatically decreased so that his medications have already been cut in half.   The family can now enjoy taking outings together.  People who know this child say "we can't believe how far he has come especially in the last couple of months with doing hyperbaric."
